There is a lot of depth to the characters that you do not always find in children’s books. The character of Madame Rosita is especially dynamic.

Author Tuula Pere has created a fascinating world in this entertaining children’s book. Each of the characters has a distinct personality and everyone’s job is important.

Tuule Pere is also the illustrator of this book, and her drawings bring the characters to life. Readers will get to know the characters through their roles as circus performers and from their part in Operation Hannibal.

This book does have some interesting characters. One of our favorites was Budo, a strongman who is one of Mr. Cannelloni's oldest friends. When Cannelloni feels the walls closing in, it's his oldest friend who steps up and takes him fishing.

On a concept level, this book's premise is great. There are quite a few stories out there of people trying to save failing businesses (and circuses), and almost all of them are good.

Budo looks great on page 34 and the cards on 44 look good, for example.

Mr. Cannelloni's Circus is a tale of survival, community celebration, and the magic that can happen when people come together.

I found this tale engaging, fun, and realistic. Sometimes I wondered if this story might be taken from real events—that’s how it seemed. I was swept up in the characters, rooting for them all the way, hoping that everything would turn out well in the end.

Tuula Pere, the author and illustrator of this delightful book, gives readers a colorful glimpse into the lives of circus performers.
